The purpose of the side projects
is to keep the IYMS delegates involved throughout the year with each other, with a simple project that won't take that much time, but will enable all of us to learn more about countries and cultures. We'll be able to see our similarities and our differences.
A Day in the Life
IYMS alumni connected with each other throughout the year while also involving their family and friends. We matched them in pairs and gave them prompts for making short videos, e.g., the topic for September was "Food".
They videotaped and edited 1 minute short videos on 10 different topics in their countries and posted it to YouTube or Vimeo, not just documenting, but capturing the essence of life in their surroundings. At the end of the 10 months, clips from each country were edited together into one 10 minute video which was screened at the 13th IYMS in Sydney, Australia.”

IYMS Film Forum
Every month a different filmmaker, mentor or film instructor will moderate an online discussion about a different element of film making. The moderator will choose a film (preferably from his/her country or culture) which would be available on Netflix or other streaming apps.
Participants would have two weeks to watch the recommended film. The moderator would pose questions on the closed facebook page that has been created, and after two weeks, we would move on to the next topic, with a new moderator and film.
Topics would include:
- Camera Composition
- Production Design
- Lighting
- Sound
- Music Supervision
- Camera Movement
- Motifs
- Color
- Editing
- ...and more!
